If you're anything like me you've definitely felt left out on your basic single speed beach cruiser while the entire world around you zips by on their cool new electric bikes. I guess feeling like a peasant at the beach got me thinking that I didn't just want to a new ebike to fit it, I convinced myself that I actually needed it! The question with so many of these bikes to choose from, what is the best electric bike and could it withstand not only my weight but the abuse I would throw at it.
Of course I couldn't buy just one, my wife and I do just about everything together so I would to need find something to suit her needs as well. One of the main concerns and limitations I had going into my search was the size of the bikes. We travel quite a bit in our van and I really didn't want large bikes that would take up a substantial amount of space making things more compact than they already are. I know you're probably thinking, that's what bike racks are for right? Yeah, they are but when we hop out to go into a restaurant or a grocery store I want the ability and convience of being able to put the bikes inside the van where they can't be stolen. Not only was the van and traveling a concern but my garage as well. I already have so much other stuff going on in there that I really didn't have the extra room to spare for two more large bikes.
Ultimately we decided to go with Murf Electric Bikes. The reputation, quality, and styling of their ebikes were just unmatched in my opinion compared to other brands. After doing my research, discussing with friends who already owned a Murf, and learning they offered a smaller or miniture sized frame that could support my weight, I was extremely confident in my decision to go with the Murf brand. From supporting local business to providing a superior product, Murf made it really easy for us when choosing the best ebike for the beach. I've provided a full no B.S. review of our bikes and our experience down below. Read More Here.
Overall my wife and I are extremely please and happy with our decision and I am already looking at buying a couple more for my parents for their retirement gifts.

COOL STUFF
Check out the two Murf Electric bikes we purchased for our summer at the beach.
Don't be fooled by the smaller profile of this mini electric bike. Though the Higgs may come in a smaller package, it comes packed with a ton of power.
This electric mini bike has the same beefy parts as it's big brother, the Fat Murf, so you're getting all the same quality and top notch performance, but in a package that's easier to park and maneuver.
The latest model in the Murf family of electric bikes: the Higgs Step-Thru was designed and created for shorter riders in mind. And while step-thru style bikes are generally designed for woman and shorter riders, don't let that hold you gentlemen back from picking up one of these bikes. Personally after riding around on my Higgs and this model (My wife's), I prefer to hop on this one instead. It's just a bit more comfortable to ride and keeps better posture.
Living in South Orange County there are three popular brands of electric bikes you see people riding. Murf Electric Bikes, Rad Power Bikes, and Super73. While I have to say the styling and old school look of the Super73 is probably my favorite, I really wanted to support and go with a local company. I ended up going with Murf Electric Bikes because of their solid reputation in Orange County and the convenience of having the manufacture right in your backyard incase of any issues or repairs needed.
Murf not only has an outstanding reputation within the local community but also a 4.9 star rating on Google, so they've got to be doing something right. A few of our friends have them and had nothing but positive things to say about their experience.
What also drew me over to Murf was the different styles of bikes they had available. It worked perfectly that not only were they a local company but also offered smaller or mini versions of their bikes. What I think used to be called the "Mini", the Murf Higgs and Higgs Step-Thru are smaller versions of their flagship Fat Murf and Fat Murf Step-Thru bikes.
The big question though was if these smaller bikes would be able to hold up to my size and weight. I'm six foot and about 220 lbs so I definitely was curious if I would be able to get the full expected battery life and speeds out of the bike. We purchase one Obsidian Black Higgs and one Denim Higgs Step-Thru, and so far we absolutely love our new electric bikes.
After I placed my order online I began to have some doubts about my choice to go with the smaller bike for myself. Within two days I had already put 30 miles on the bike and was completely stoked on my new purchase. My wife absolutely loves her bike and being as short as she is she really loves the Step-Thru style. One of the main differences between the Higgs and the Higgs Step-Thru are the handle bars. The regular Higgs comes with a standard beach cruiser style set of handle bars while the Step-Thru option comes with a more bmx/drag bar style. So far this is the only thing I would change about my bike. While I do love the traditional look of a classic beach cruiser, the taller bars on the Step-Thru make for a much more comfortable ride.
I did notice after placing my order that Murf just released the Jamie O'Brien edition Higgs ebike which comes with the classic beach cruiser frame but the same bars as the Step-Thru. Overall it's not a big deal and I'm probably just going to purchase a set up the bars and swap them out.
What's interesting and pretty awesome is these bikes get really great range, especially with the amount of weight I am putting on the motor. These specific models state that they have an up to 45 mile range and I've had no problem getting the full juice out of the battery.
Where these bikes make all the difference are the steep hills you will find through Dana Point, Laguna Beach, and San Clemente. While my fat a** doesn't fly up the hill as fast as my wife, with a little bit of peddle assist I'm able to comfortable cruise up fairly steep hills at 15 mph with ease. And when I say steep hills, I'm talking inclines that are impossible to peddle a regular bike up and will give your calves a months worth of conditioning.
So, are Murf Electric Bikes the best ebikes on the market? I really don't know and I've got a lot of other brands to give a fair shake at, but I can say the hype is legit. These are extremely well-built bikes and you can really see the care and quality in the design and construction of these bikes. Over past few weeks since purchasing these awesome bikes they have become our primary mode of transportation. Quick rides to the grocery store for the eggs we forgot, bar crawls on Saturday, and general just get out of the house and go for a ride.
If you're unsure about whether these bikes are for you they offer potential customers an opportunity to come and try out there bikes. Get a feel for the quality, how they operate, and which style best suits your needs.

So, what's the hype around electric bikes? What are electric bikes and how do they work? Well, let's break it down for you.
Electric bikes are essentially standard bicycles with electric assist motors. They're packed with an electric motor that helps you pedal or can even completely take over when your legs are tired out.
Ebikes come with rechargeable batteries, similar to the ones in your smartphone or laptop, but much more powerful. This battery is connected to the motor, and voila, you've got an e-bike. Once you've run down the battery (which usually lasts between 15-60 miles, depending on the model), you plug it in, charge it up, and you're good to go. It's that simple!
E-bikes come in different styles too. Some only give you a little boost when you're pedaling, perfect for when you're tackling that pesky hill or when your legs are yelling for a break. Others can take you cruising at around 20 mph without any pedaling at all. The level of power and the speed of the bike depends on the type and model you choose.
These motor-assisted bicycles have been a hit with both the young and the young-at-heart. They offer an enjoyable way to get around town, make commuting a breeze, and help in adding a dash of physical activity into our daily lives - without the huffing and puffing.
Now, if you're thinking that e-bikes are just for the lazy ones among us, think again. E-bikes are also a fantastic tool for folks who want to cycle longer distances, but are limited by fitness or health concerns. They make the world of cycling accessible to all.
E-bikes are a blend of traditional pedal power and electric oomph. They're a great choice for anyone looking to add a bit of zip to their commute, a small bit of exercise to their routine, or a whole lot of fun to their day.
